Front cover

For the front cover I decided to keep it simple and use a black background with white writing. This mirrors the simplicity and clean feel to the layout of the rest of the book but also makes references to the colours of a vinyl record.

Marley's Chains

I think the portraits from this shoot were very successful as they really show the different personalities of the band members.

Here are some other photos from the shoot that I decided not to use:

Development of person profile

Book Layouts

This was my first attempt at experimenting with the layout of my book. I think the crisp white background of the portrait and book gives it a clean and professiononal feel. I do not think the left side to the spead works as well as just using the album art makes it look flat. The writing also looks very cramped.

Here I have experimented with the text for my book. Due to the theme I decided to design it like the back of a CD.

Possible things to put in profile:
  • Name
  • Band name
  • Genre of band
  • When band was formed
  • Number of members
  • Favourite venue played
  • Signature song of own band
  • Musical influences
  • Favourite song at the moment
  • Greatest Musician
  • First album ever bought

With this layout I incorporated my text into the actual back cover of the CD. I used the original text as a reference on how to style the writing. I do not think this works as the cover of the CD is distracting making the writing not the focus of attention.

To focus more attention on the writing I went back to incorporating my text into my own version of the back of the CD. I found that this also didn't work because despite the colours working on the original CD it looks odd out of context.

This final version is the best out of the lot, however I am still not happy with it. So in retrospect due to time limitations I have decided to keep the book simple by just using the text on its on for the left hand side of the spread.

As an idea I decided to experiment with matching the style of font to the genre of music each person played. However with the resources i have I could not find suitable fonts to do this. I found that the ones available made certain connotations for example the first font looks similar to one seen on a wedding invite, the second looks like newspaper text and the third restaurant text.

I feel this layout works much better and keeping the same font per person keeps it clean and simple.

After consideration, to make the book look more professional and clean I decided to make the font size smaller and keep it left aligned.

First set of portraits

Twin Planets

These are what I feel were the most successful photos from this shoot. I used high key lighting with 2 sets of lights on the background and and another 2 on the subject at a 2/3 ratio.

Book Proposal

  • in·di·vid·u·al [n] : a singular person distinguished from others by a special quality [Syn. Character, original, unique, one self].

Overview and Rationale – I am going to produce a book consisting of portraits of musicians. For each portrait I am going to include a corresponding image of the album cover of the first album they bought. I think it will be interesting to see the progression of their music taste and how much it has changed over the years.

Aims and objectives - By undertaking this assignment I aim to further my knowledge of portraiture photography. I will also learn about working in a studio environment and keeping photographs consistent in regards to lighting, setting and editing. Finally I will

References -

Charles Fréger

He works in series neatly categorising people, this ranges from men who clean the street to cooks. His images reflect on how people are different within a group. This is relevant to my work as I want to show how despite my subjects having the same interest their music and personalities differ greatly.

Kevin Cummins
His photographs of Joy Division subvert expectations by placing the band in a setting which you wouldn't usually use for band promotion shots. His photos feature urban Manchester. This is similar to my work in that he surprises the viewer.

Rineke Dijkstra

She tends to work in series concentrating on individual portraits. She focuses on people in a transitional stage of their life. Her subjects always stand facing the camera against a minimal background which encourages us to direct all our attention towards the isolated subject.

Individuals – portraits from the Gap collection
The portraits in this collection were designed to celebrate the uniqueness of the celebrity icon featured.

* This final concept was developed from previous ideas of producing a book just of portraits and also of producing a book of portraits which includes corresponding images of a detail of the subject's life which the viewer may find surprising such as an unusual hobby, body feature e.g. scar or tattoo, or precious belonging.
